The Jefferson nickel was first minted in 1938 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Jefferson's presidency. The obverse portrait was designed by Felix Schlag, who won a competition for the design. Schlag's signature is discreetly located on the truncation of Jefferson's bust. The reverse features Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia plantation.

The nickel's design has remained largely unchanged since its introduction, although minor modifications have occurred, such as the addition of the designer's initials in 1966 and a special reverse design for the bicentennial in 1976.
